Sedation Dentistry
At East Lake Advancing Dentistry, we realize that many people have phobias about going to the dentist. Anxiety in patients is something we are very conscious and understanding of. We want every trip you take to our office to be an enjoyable, relaxing experience. Because we understand your needs and can relate to your feelings, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral (conscious) sedation as options.
Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation
One of the most common forms of dental sedation is nitrous oxide. It is safe and extremely effective both in addressing the anxiety of patients and providing a pleasant experience while having dental work done. Often called “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is used for mild sedation and is relied upon to give the patient a relaxed, warm feeling. This feeling is often accompanied by happy or silly thoughts and behavior. Overall, nitrous oxide is a great tool that has few significant or pronounced side effects.
If you are having a procedure done and wish to have nitrous oxide administered just talk with Dr. Eng. The process for administering nitrous oxide is fairly straight forward, it starts with a facemask that we place over your nose. A mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide will flow through the facemask and all you have to do is breath normally. You will be given some time for the effects to kick in. Sometimes a feeling of lightheadedness or tingling of the limbs can manifest, it is important to note that this is normal. The end result will be a feeling of calm comfort.
At the end of your procedure we will turn off the flow of nitrous oxide in your mask and depending on your level of sedation we will either give you some oxygen through the mask or just take the mask off to allow the effects to wear off.

Oral Sedation
We employ a variety of oral sedation methods to our patients to help them feel safe and comfortable during any procedure.
Oral sedation is employed in many dental procedures to ensure the patient’s comfort. Novocain is a numbing agent that we often use, and it does a great job of numbing specific parts of the mouth. We also employ the use of a few under-the-tongue sedation medicines that are extremely effective.
It is important to note that all sedation applied at our office is done under the supervision of professionals who are well trained and care about your comfort and health. Some types of sedation require that you have a driver to bring you home from your appointment. Some sedation methods will take longer than others to wear off.
We care about your health and your comfort. If you ever feel concerned about anything from a procedure to a routine cleaning, please let us know! We are happy to take any steps needed to make certain you are comfortable and anxiety free.
