Testing for Gum Disease
Gum disease is one of the most prevalent, and often undetected afflictions in adults. Because gum disease often is not painful, you might not even know you have it. This emphasizes the importance of regular dental exams, so that as signs of gum disease appear, we can offer preventive resources to treat and avoid further damage to your gums and bone.
At East Lake Advancing Dentistry, we have the technology to use a sample of your saliva to test for the bacteria most associated with gum disease. This test identifies specific bacteria and how much of it is present in your mouth. Your dental professionals can then use this information in using specific antibiotics that target the bacteria causing your infection. The goal is to kill the bacteria before they can cause bone loss, which then results in traditional scaling and root planing treatment.
Research continues to show that gum disease is often associated with other diseases like diabetes and heart disease. It has also been linked low birth weight in babies whose pregnant mothers had gum disease.
